At a virtual meeting, the Speaker of the Parliament of Montenegro, Aleksa Bečić, said that his country would no longer allow stagnation on the path to European integration. This was reported by the news agency Vijesti.
He added that a more rapid adoption of European standards would lead to the swift closure of all “negotiation chapters and Montenegro’s membership in the European Union
”.Bečić noted that the parliamentary elections held in Montenegro in 2020 were historic, and that both the ruling circles and the opposition deserved the change of power.Outlining the priorities of the new parliamentary convocation, Bečić emphasized that one of the key goals is to give parliament the status of the main actor in socio-political life. He also thanked European officials for the financial assistance provided by the EU to Montenegro toovercome the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic
.As a reminder, the EU strategy published in February 2018 stated that Montenegro and Serbia were the frontrunners that could be “potentially ready” to join the EU in 2025.
