Speed cameras are planned to be installed in addition to road patrols, which stop offenders every day on Montenegrin roads. Although this idea has been discussed for almost three years, it has not been implemented due to a lack of funds in the budget. The required investment amounts to 2.2 million euros.
At present, Montenegro is the only country in the region that does not have a fixed radar system. It helps the police monitor traffic, especially during the tourist season.
Fixed radar systems will be prioritized in areas and locations where traffic accidents occur particularly frequently.
“The need for them was confirmed when, in just 24 hours, we had more than 20 traffic accidents, unfortunately with fatal outcomes,” notes Rasko Konjevic, deputy president of the SDP and a member of the Parliament of Montenegro.
The introduction of these systems will reduce the need for police officers to be present. This will make it possible to save the budget needed for the investment.
“We will definitely propose a similar amendment in a few months, when it comes time to approve the budget for 2020,” Konjevic said.
