Montenegro plans to renovate the former port in Virpazar. This is stated in the government’s 2020–2030 maritime economy development strategy. Restoring the port will make it possible to establish a lake connection between Montenegro and Albania. The renovated port will be beneficial for both countries.
The restoration work at the port in Virpazar will be carried out under the ALMONIT MTC project. The investment amounts to 2.44 million euros, of which 85% will be co-financed under the IPA II project, while 15% will be allocated from the state budget.
The Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs has already received approved urban planning and technical conditions for the first phase of the restoration of the Virpazar port. Construction of the port is scheduled for June 2022.
