The Government of Montenegro is preparing a draft law that provides for a complete ban on plastic bags. The law is expected to be adopted by the end of the year. The ban will also apply to plastic cutlery, plates, straws, and more.
The adoption of the new law was initiated by the citizen group #CleanME, which opposes the use of plastic bags.
The group submitted a petition and collected about 5,300 signatures. The petition was presented to Montenegro’s Minister of Sustainable Development and Tourism.
Each citizen of the country uses about 730 single-use plastic bags annually. By comparison, Austrian citizens use only 48 bags per year.
