President of the European Parliament David Sassoli has spoken in favor of the accession of Western Balkan states to the European Union.
According to Sassoli, EU enlargement will benefit both the region and Europe as a whole, as it will ensure “stability, prosperity and peace on the continent.” He also stressed that the European Union must “keep the promise” made to the Balkan countries.
At the same time, he noted that the pace of enlargement depends on each individual Western Balkan country.
“In each state, reforms must be fully implemented,” the RTS television channelRTSquoted Sassoli as saying in an interview with Germany’s Funke Mediengruppe.
As a reminder, the EU administration in Brussels previously changed the rules for new countries joining the bloc. The changes primarily affected the Balkan countries, which are first in line forEU accession, such as Serbia and Montenegro.
