The public organization biciklo.me says that improving conditions for bicycle use should be accompanied by the development of public transport, which is currently in a deplorable state in Podgorica.
However, the good news is that the draft budget for 2021 proposes increasing subsidies for public transport, as well as allocating €5 million for the purchase of new buses in order to improve the quality of public transport services. This confirms that the Podgorica Administration is working to solve public transport problems. It also means that modernizing public transport will improve conditions for cycling and walking.
“Bicycles are considered the most economical means of transport within urban areas over a distance of 5 km. Most of the distances covered by Podgorica residents are shorter. As is well known, bicycles do not pollute the air, do not make noise, have a positive effect on pedestrian flow, and reduce parking problems,” say representatives of the public organization.
In addition, a bicycle is a relatively inexpensive means of transport, which means it is widely accessible to all social groups, because the ride is free.
Let us recall that at the beginning of the year, Podgorica adopted its first Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan — a strategic document that creates the preconditions for sustainable mobility planning and overcoming transport problems in the city through a balanced approach to all modes of transport.
The goal of this plan is to improve the quality of life of all citizens by increasing mobility, improving road safety, reducing pollution, and improving people’s health. This will be achieved through investment in sustainable forms of mobility — walking, public transport, and cycling.
