Wizz Air’s announcement that, starting in March 2026, the airline will open its base in Podgorica and launch 14 new routes across Europe sparked great interest among travelers from Montenegro. The news not only reinforced expectations of more affordable flights, but also highlighted the country’s growing importance as an aviation and tourism-connected point on the regional map.
Against this backdrop, the portal Investitor compared Wizz Air ticket prices from Podgorica and neighboring Tirana to find out where it is really cheaper to fly from.
The analysis results were clear: if you take into account the real costs of travel, parking, and time, flights from Podgorica become the most cost-effective choice for most residents of Montenegro.
Podgorica wins on most routes
According to the June 2026 price comparison, Podgorica offers lower ticket prices on three out of four popular routes — to Barcelona, Paris, and Rome.
Barcelona: a round-trip ticket from Podgorica costs on average 105.98 euros, from Tirana — 134.15 euros, which makes the Podgorica option cheaper by 28 euros.
Paris: a clear advantage — 70.98 euros versus 103.15 euros from Tirana.
Rome: almost a tie, but it is still cheaper to fly from Podgorica — 71.98 euros versus 76.28 euros.
The only route where
Tirana is nominally cheaper
is
Malmö
: the difference is about
18 euros
(192 versus 210). However, even this advantage disappears if real travel costs are included.
Podgorica, October 14, 2025 — Wizz Air, one of Montenegro’s leading airlines, announced the creation of its 36th base in Podgorica. This is an important step for the development of the aviation sector and the country’s economy.
Starting in March 2026, two modern Airbus A321neo aircraft will be gradually based in Podgorica, and 14 new routes to key European cities will also be launched: Basel-Mulhouse, Paris, Baden-Baden, Cologne, Hamburg, Rome, Maastricht, Barcelona, Ljubljana, Malmö, Gdańsk, Poznań, Rzeszów, and Wrocław. Ticket prices start at 19.99 euros.
The expansion will provide more than 1 million additional seats per year and strengthen Podgorica’s position as an important European transport hub. Tickets are already available on wizzair.com and in the WIZZ mobile app.
With the launch of the base, Wizz Air now offers 23 routes from Podgorica, connecting Montenegro with 12 countries.
When a “cheap ticket” becomes more expensive
Many travelers from Montenegro increasingly choose Tirana Airport because of the larger number of flights and destinations. But when calculated in detail, nominally lower prices quickly lose their meaning.
A trip from Podgorica to Tirana and back costs 40–60 euros if you factor in fuel, parking, and possible transfers. Adding these expenses to the ticket price makes it clear that flying from Podgorica is cheaper on almost all routes.
Example:
Barcelona — 134 € + 50 € travel = 184 € from Tirana, versus 106 € from Podgorica.
Paris — 103 € + 50 € = 153 € from Tirana, versus 71 € from Podgorica.
Even for Malmö: 192 € + 50 € = 242 €, whereas from Podgorica — 210 €.
The factor of time and convenience
Besides money, time should also be taken into account. The trip to Tirana airport takes up to three hours one way, plus possible delays at the border. For short trips, such as a weekend city break, this becomes a decisive drawback.
A journey that begins with a long trip, waiting, and additional expenses no longer looks “cheap”.
When Tirana is still the better option
And yet the Albanian capital retains an advantage in some cases. If a group of three or four people is traveling, travel costs are shared, and the savings on tickets can be significant. However, even then, additional factors must be considered — time, logistics, and comfort.
For solo travelers and couples, the calculation is simple: Podgorica wins — both on price and convenience.
A wider choice does not mean cheaper
Tirana does indeed offer a broader network of destinations, especially on routes to Scandinavia and Western Europe, where several low-cost carriers operate at once. But the analysis shows: a wide choice does not always equal real value.
The true cost of a trip is made up not only of the airfare, but also of all related expenses — from the trip to the airport to the time spent on transfers.
Podgorica is becoming a hub for affordable flights
With the opening of the Wizz Air base and the launch of new routes, Podgorica Airport is turning into a full-fledged low-cost flight hub in the region. This strengthens its position not only as a hub for domestic mobility, but also as Montenegro’s gateway to Europe.
For most residents of the country and tourists, the calculation today is obvious: flying from Podgorica is cheaper, faster, and easier.
