The EU has provided Montenegro with financial support in the amount of 40.2 million euros for the development of railway infrastructure. Half of it will be provided in the form of grants, and the remaining funds will be provided in the form of loans from the European Investment Bank. This was announced by the EU Council on the development of the investment framework for the countries of the Western Balkans.

The EU funds allocated under the Western Balkans Investment Programme include a grant of 22 million euros, which was provided for the preparation and implementation of new infrastructure projects, of which 20.1 million euros will be invested in the reconstruction project of the Bar — Vrbnica railway line.

“Good infrastructure is the foundation of economic development, cooperation, and European partnership. Thus, by investing in infrastructure development in Montenegro, the European Union wants to support the recovery of the economy and the further development of Montenegro’s economy and its ties with EU member states. Friends get to know each other in adversity. The European Union will help the citizens of Montenegro overcome this difficult crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. These significant investments in the development of sustainable forms of transport in the amount of 40 million euros are the latest in a series of clear statements of support for Montenegro’s integration path by the EU,” said the EU Ambassador to Montenegro, Oana Cristina Popa.
